The timing problem
In seasonal Mediterranean properties most rain falls when the hotel is closed, so annual rainfall totals badly overstate usable yield.
Usually out of phase with demand in dry-summer climates. Storage volume, not roof area, is normally the binding constraint.
This is why Aquiterum models rainwater against your operating season rather than against an annual rainfall figure, and grades the result as modelled rather than measured until you can supply real data.
What a system contains
- Catchment: roofs, terraces and clean hard standing, with gutters routed to one point.
- First-flush diversion, to send the dirtiest initial runoff to drain.
- Filtration before storage, and a covered, light-excluding tank.
- Pump set and a marked non-potable distribution loop with backflow prevention.
- Mains top-up through an air gap, so supply never fails when the tank empties.
- Metering on the harvested loop, so the saving is measured rather than assumed.
Caution. First-flush diversion and covered storage are required. Roof materials, bird fouling and stored-water stagnation all affect quality; local rules on rainwater use vary widely.
Common questions
- How much rainwater can a hotel roof collect?
- Multiply roof area in square metres by rainfall depth in metres by a runoff coefficient of about 0.8. A 1,000 m² roof under 100 mm of rain collects roughly 80 cubic metres. What you can use is smaller again, because it depends on storage volume and when the rain falls.
- Why does annual rainfall overstate the yield?
- In seasonal Mediterranean-style properties most rain falls when the hotel is closed or lightly occupied, and there is rarely enough tank volume to hold winter rain until the summer irrigation season. Usable yield can be a small fraction of the annual total.
- What can harvested rainwater be used for in a hotel?
- Landscape irrigation, toilet flushing, laundry pre-rinse, cooling-tower make-up and external washdown are the usual non-potable duties. Potable use requires a different treatment class and regulatory approval.
- What does a rainwater system need?
- Gutters and downpipes routed to a collection point, first-flush diversion, filtration, covered storage, a pump set, a non-potable distribution loop with marked pipework and backflow prevention, and a mains top-up with an air gap.
